I always had the idea that Europe is the most beautiful country in the world, I always had the mentality that Europe is the richest country in the world. Then, when I arrive in Italy, they tell me that there are thousands of people sleeping in the streets, I could not understand this. I asked myself a question and I can testify that in my country, even though we are a poor country, the homeless do not exist. For us the homeless are the sick, the insane, those who are not well. When I arrived here, someone told me that homeless people exist and I couldn’t understand. In fact, the first time I came here I felt very bad, but it also gave me a push to move forward.

The first day that I did the distribution of meals, I almost cried, that first day at the first meeting I had. Because I always had the idea that Europe is the most beautiful country, I always had the mentality that Europe is the richest country in the world. And then, when I arrive in Italy I see that thousands of people are sleeping in the streets. I couldn’t understand this thing, I asked myself a question “but how is this possible?”. From Gambia I can testify that the homeless do not exist, even though we are such a poor country. The homeless do not exist, for us the homeless are the sick, the crazy, those who are not well. When I arrived here, someone told me that there are many homeless people here. I couldn’t understand, in fact the first time I went around I was disappointed. But it also gave me a push to go on, I gained courage seeing those living on the streets. And we don’t just go and give them a meal and then say goodbye. I always say that those who have no home, have nothing and sometimes they need a greeting, sometimes they need a hug to go on with their lives. These are the services we provide when we go to distribute meals. We go and have a chat and try to get them to tell us, to listen to their experiences. So, this has given me a push, it has always been another engine to move forward.
